We want to make your shopping experience the best it can possibly be, and by giving you clear, honest terms, we figure that is the best way to start!

Small Dog FAQ

Why am I being charged tax on my order when I don't live in VT?

We are required by law to collect sales tax in the states where we have employees. As of January 2014, we have Small Dog employees working in MA, MD, NC, and FL, so we have had to adjust our online tax collection accordingly. Thanks for your understanding and support -- nothing is more certain than death and taxes!

Can I buy my new Mac on

Our contract with Apple limits sales of current Apple products on the internet to our existing customers, which we designate as members of our Top Dog Club. The term "current" indicates products that Apple is currently manufacturing, and may include new and demo condition products.

We carry many previous generation (discontinued), refurbished and used Apple products which do not have this restriction, but are brand-new out of the box. So the term "new" doesn't necessarily exclude products you may purchase without a Top Dog Pro account.

What is a Top Dog account, and what is the difference between that and a Top Dog Pro account?

The Top Dog Club is an account for Small Dog customers which allows you to earn Top Dog Club Treats with each order on, in our retail stores, or over the phone. You may also view your order history and track shipments online. Anyone and everyone is welcome to sign up for a Top Dog Club account, though there is no obligation to sign up for an account in order to make a purchase.* (*current Apple products excluded)

However, due to restrictions made by Apple, Inc., in order to purchase current Apple Products, you must upgrade from a Top Dog to a Top Dog Pro account. To receive a Top Dog Pro account, you must be a previous customer. We currently have retail stores in Waitsfield, VT, South Burlington, VT, Rutland, VT, and sunny Key West FL, so please pay us a visit if you're in the area.

What are the Top Dog Club "treats" and how do I get them?

For each dollar you spend online at the, you will receive a Dog Treat. You may redeem these "treats" for a large list of selected products, including Small Dog apparel, or use your treats to make a donation to one of our "pet charities." All members of the Top Dog Club should log in each time a purchase is made (whether or not a restricted Apple product is purchased), in order to receive Dog Treat credits.

Are you authorized to sell other brands as well?

Small Dog Electronics is an authorized reseller for all the products that we sell on our website and in our retail stores. Our inventory changes daily, so please check often for new products. We also welcome customer suggestions, so if you have a product you like, let us know!

What if I want a longer warranty than what is offered for Apple products?

Small Dog offers AppleCare Protection Plans for qualifying Apple products.

For most Apple products, AppleCare covers parts, labor and technical support for a term of two years beyond the original one year warranty. AppleCare for iPods extends the warranty for one year beyond the original warranty.

AppleCare Protection is administered through Apple Authorized Service Providers only, so customers can be assured of the highest quality service and parts for their equipment.

What if I want a longer warranty for other stuff?

We currently offer the Mack Worldwide service plans for used computers and iPads.

Why should I buy from Small Dog instead of Apple or another Apple Specialist?

What forms of payment do you accept online?

You may pay online in a variety of ways: by Credit Card, Small Dog Gift Certificate, Business Lease, PayPal and PayPal Credit.

In our Retail Stores, we accept Cash, Checks, Credit Cards, Small Dog Gift Certificates and Small Dog Gift Cards as well as Business Leases for payment.

When will my credit card be charged?

In order to process your order as quickly as possible, to limit unexpected holdups, and to protect you from identity theft, upon completion of your order we perform an immediate "capture" against your credit card for the full amount of your order. This will verify your name, address, and credit card security code as well as verify that the funds are available to complete your order. Your credit card company will put a temporary hold on the funds until we "capture" the final payment, which we will do as quickly as possible or void the authorization. If your credit card is declined for some reason, you will be immediately notified within our shopping cart and will be able to rectify the situation before completing your order. We will not perform the final "capture" of funds until your order is ready to ship.

Can I use a check or money order to pay for a web order?

Yes! Small Dog Electronics accepts business and personal checks as well as money orders for online purchases. Simply fill your cart and proceed to checkout. On the final payment page, click on the Check / Money Order tab, then click the box to complete your order with a check or money order.

Important conditions apply:

  • Orders paid by check or money order take longer to process because they must first be cleared with the bank.
  • We must receive your payment within 7 days of placing your order, or your order will be cancelled with no exceptions.
  • When you send in your check or money order, please write your web order number on your check, and print a copy of your completed web order.

How do I purchase a gift certificate online?

Our gift certificates and gift cards are located in the Gifts category, in the left navigation bar. We offer Small Dog gift certificates, good for anything on our website, as well as iTunes Gift Cards, for use at the iTunes Store.

What is your price protection policy?

One of the dilemmas we face as we do specials for our newsletters, Garage Sales, and internet specials on our web site, is how to deal with customers who have just purchased products prior to the sale. We understand how frustrating it must be to find that you purchased a product that suddenly goes down in price (though we seldom get customers who volunteer to pay us more money when our prices go up!).

It is sometimes difficult to take pricing actions even if we have developed a new source of supply, as we will end up losing money by doing so. The product you bought last week may have cost us more than the product we have on sale this week, but our ultimate goal is to be able to pass our savings on to our customers.

Small Dog Electronics Price Protection Policy

Small Dog will, upon request, issue a store credit (which may be used for future purchases) for the difference in the sale price if you meet the following conditions:

  • Goods have been purchased within (1) week of a price drop or Small Dog sale.
  • Your purchase must qualify for all price reduction sale conditions.
  • This price protection is only valid for identical items or bundles.

Price adjustments from manufacturers which are not part of a special are NOT covered under this policy.

Do you accept international orders?

We accept international orders, however, there are some exceptions and extra considerations for our international customers. We do not ship Apple Products internationally as we are restricted from doing so by our contract with Apple. There are additional vendors who restrict international sales as well. Promotions, rebates and specials in most cases are not applicable to international orders.

Please do your research before placing an order to determine the rebate or promotion status from the manufacturer. Warranties may also not be valid outside of the USA. Please check with the manufacturer to determine warranty status prior to placing your order. All international orders require positive ID for credit card verification, your order may be delayed while we obtain such verification.

What are your shipping rules?

Our primary shipping carrier is UPS. If preferred, you are able to select another carrier in the cart before your order is finalized.

How do I post a review about a product?

We love to hear from you regarding your experience with products we carry! Here's what to do:

How will my order ship?

Most orders ship within 24 hours, and we offer US Mail and UPS ground, three day, two day, and overnight shipping. The shipping times vary, depending on whether the product is in stock, but we replenish our inventory daily.

What does the term "refurbished" mean?

Refurbished computers are machines that have been returned for any number of reasons including software incompatibility, failure of a component, or physical imperfection. Some refurbished computers have never been used or sold to the public, because of inventory overstocks. These store returns can not be resold as new machines so they are returned to the manufacturer and put through a rigorous testing and repair program to be brought back to "as new" condition, repackaged and sent to authorized resellers like Small Dog Electronics, where they are sold as refurbished products.

How many condition codes are there?

Small Dog has six condition codes (sometimes abbreviated as "cc"), which we use to define the condition of all of the products we sell.

What are the different kinds of rebates?

  • Manufacturer Mail-In Rebates: Rebates offered by the manufacturer, redeemable via mail only.
  • Manufacturer Upgrade Rebates: Rebates offered on Upgrade software; Most require proof of ownership of original software.
  • Small Dog Electronics Mail-In Rebate: Rebates offered by Small Dog Electronics, redeemable via mail only.
  • Manufacturer Bundle Rebate: Rebates offered on certain products when purchased as a bundle (two or more products purchased as a set; i.e. printer and system)

Is it best to send a copy of my receipt and hold onto the original?

You'll need to review the rebate form (or legal description) to see whether or not the manufacturer asks you to send the original. Many times they just ask for a copy. Again, if you send your original, always keep a copy for yourself.

What does it mean if I'm asked to send the original "UPC"?

This means you will need to send the product barcode, usually found on the packaging. But some boxes may have several different barcodes, and it can get confusing! If you are unsure, ask someone at the point of purchase or call the customer service number on your rebate form.

I forgot to send in for my rebate and it has expired. Can I send it in late and still receive my rebate?

Promotions such as rebates are carefully planned for very specific time frames. If the postmark date has passed for your rebate, unfortunately you will not qualify. Rebates are special because they aren't offered all the time so check your dates and apply promptly!

How do I check the status of my rebate?

It's good idea to keep copies of the rebate paperwork you've mailed. When you're ready to check on your rebate, you should find a toll free number printed on the rebate form. Simply call and ask about your rebate.

Can all rebates be downloaded from Small Dog?

No. Though most rebate PDFs can be downloaded on (via product specials or within the product description), certain manufacturer restrictions dictate that some are only available in-store or will be mailed to you with the product itself.
