I got my little Rat Terrier after I had to have my 14-year-old Boxer girl
put down due to advanced cancer. It is rare for a Boxer to live beyond 10
years. Twelve years for a Boxer is amazing. Fourteen is almost unheard of.
She was a wonderful dog, and she was loved, and is missed.
After Agnes of Dog died, I really wasn't looking for another dog. I wanted to wait a while to get over her death, and then think about finding another companion. I was definitely thinking about another Boxer, but my sister in
Texas (I live in Colorado) called and said, "We've found a dog for you. He is perfect for you!" Then she told me that he was a Rat Terrier. I've grown up around Rat Terriers, since 1959, when I was a pup. So, I flew down to Texas and picked the little bastard up. Flew him under my seat back to Denver. He's been my friend ever since.
One unique thing about him is that one of his canine teeth was pulled loose
from its socket when he was very young, due to rough handling and playing
with a towel. It became dislodged, and now protrudes even with his mouth
closed. So, he has a perpetual grin. After 20 years of Boxers, it is quite strange to adjust to a terrier. Boxers live to be obedient and follow instruction. Terriers, on the other hand, are willing to obey as long as they feel that there is some sort of entertainment to be gained from the effort. Nonetheless, I love the boy (well, he is MOSTLY a boy...).
He is fully grown now, and might weigh 17 pounds on a wet day.
Later,
Ranger Jay
Oops.
His name is Buck. Buck Bolt, 'cause he has always been as fast as a bolt of lightening.
