For the iMacs released late July 2010 and MacBook Pros from February 2011

DDR3- Also known as DOUBLE DATA RATE 3 SYNCHRONOUS DRAM. DDR3 is faster than DDR2 memory and the two are not compatible.

The benefit of DDR3 memory is the ability to transfer at twice the data rate of DDR2 memory, thus enabling higher bus rates and higher peak rates than earlier memory technologies. In addition, the DDR3 standard allows for chip capacities up to 8 gigabits, effectively enabling a maximum memory module size of 16 gigabytes (16GB).

DDR3 memory also provides a reduction in power consumption of 30% compared to DDR2 memory. Common DDR3 memory types are PC3-6400, PC3-8500, PC3-10600 and PC3-12800.

Installation Requirement

Some computers require RAM chips to be installed in sets. This is typically because the computer designers are speeding up the memory bandwidth by dividing the data across more than one chip; i.e. You can get twice the bandwidth if half the data is on one chip and half on the other.

I have upgraded both of my MBPs to this ram. I have used the 4gb modules and the 8gb. Both have been great, made a world of difference in the i7s. Highly recommend.
